TDDT Prospective MembersAll you need to know for now.
We hope that you'll join our team!
We hope that you'll join our team!
As we write in our bylaws, "[t]he specific objective and purpose of The Texas Dragon/Lion Dance Team is to educate the organization and the community regarding the art, culture, and practice of dragon and lion dance." So we're really excited that you've shown an interest!
In many ways, this team is a family. Some of our members have been members for decades! We hope that you'll feel the same way and decide to join our team and elect to become a sashed member of our team. We also understand that you may have competing priorities, so no worries if things don't work out.
Hopefully, the resources on this page will help get you started. Far more resources are made available to sashed members. That said, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
NOTE
Practices may be cancelled in the event of inclement weather.

The Texas Dragon/Lion Dance Team (TDDT) is a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and Texas nonprofit with our student organization as an officially-recognized affiliate chapter.
At the top, we have a Board of Directors who function primarily in an oversight role. Their responsibility is to ensure that the Executive Officers are receiving the support that they need and are acting in the best interests of the team.
The Executive Officers run the team. We have a President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a Treasurer, and a Secretary. Ultimately, they are the ones in charge. Unless there's a dispute which needs to be resolved, even the Board of Directors will defer to the Executive Officers.
The Assistant Instructors are designated by our lead instructor to help out (and even run) practice.
For our student organization affiliate chapter, we have officers designated in HornsLink. They report to the Executive Officers.
There are more roles on our team which you'll learn about, but these are the folks you should know about at this point in time.
When you meet the criteria, you will officially join our team and become a "sashed member." It is called this because we will actually give you (at no cost) a red sash to wear at performances.
To become a sashed member, you simply need to show up to and participate in practices. Once you demonstrate that you have enough knowledge to join us in performances you will become eligible to be sashed. How long this takes depends on you, but most incoming members are sashed after about a month of attending practice.
If you're curious about specifics...

You're new around here and you likely have a lot of questions. That's great! Here are some of the questions we get the most frequently from prospective members.
Have a question which isn't on here? Just ask us at practice!
While we encourage all of our performers to attend as many practices as possible, we understand and recognize that lion and dragon dance is not the only priority in your life. It is okay to miss the occasional practice.
In particular, if you are a student we will insist that your studies always come first. We absolutely love lion dance, but we'd rather that you do well in school.
Don't worry! Once you become sashed, you'll gain access to our near-comprehensive terminology reference!
Of course, you are always welcome to ask the instructor or an assistant instructor during practice.
For now, though, you might want to check out the Terminology section on this page.
Check out the Practice section on this page. We have specific details regarding exact locations.
In a pinch, you can always check the Join page on our public site.
Finally, we automatically post this information to our Discord server on the 📢-practice-announcements channel.
Dues on the Texas Dragon/Lion Dance Team are completely optional. In fact, the only strictly mandatory purchase is a team shirt, which we cover in the team uniform question below.
The major benefit you receive from paying dues is that the team will cover your post-performance meals (within reason).
Dues are not pro-rated. This is largely because they are optional.
You have up to ten business days to request a refund of your dues, however you cannot receive a refund if we've already paid for a meal for you, you received a member discount on a seminar, or any other form of compensation.
Lessons are always free of charge to those in attendance.
As you've already figured out, we practice outdoors. (You never know what conditions you may be asked to perform under.)
For practices, wear seasonally-appropriate workout clothes with sneakers or athletic shoes.
Practitioners of kung fu may already be familiar with or possess Adidas Samba or Feiyue Fe Lo shoes which are ideal but not required.
CAUTION
While water is usually available on the UT Austin campus we strongly recommend that you bring your own water bottle.
The team uniform consists of the following:
After you have been sashed, you will be expected to:
There are other responsibilities around conducting yourself with professionalism, wearing your uniform to performances, regularly signing on to your account and checking your calendar but it's generally standard administrative stuff.
Totally okay. It's a thing that happens more frequently that you might expect. (I'm looking at you, engineering students!)
If you're still a prospective member, just let one of our Executive Officers know.
Once you're sashed, we have a simple form you can fill out.
Our only requirement is non-disparagement. In other words, if we go our separate ways, let's be respectful adults about it.
Absolutely!
Just like any member of the public, you are welcome to attend any of our public performances.
For non-public performances, you may attend only at the discretion of the team liaison assigned to the performance.
If the performance is off-campus, you are welcome to reach out on the 💬-general-#### channel in our Discord server and we'll help you to find a ride.
Here is some of the terminology you may hear us using at practice. Since our tradition is both Vietnamese and Chinese, you may hear terms in Vietnamese, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
Don't worry... once you become sashed, we'll give you access to the full list!
